The Hoover problem
Pet accidents behave differently in this climate than the internet suggests. When urine dries, the salts stay in the foundation, and salts are hygroscopic — they pull moisture out of the air. In a Birmingham summer, where highs reach ninety on around sixty-five days a year and the humidity sits high for months, those salts reactivate over and over, which is why a spot that was dealt with in February announces itself again in July. Left there, they also burn the dye: alkaline urine shifts wool dye permanently, and the longer it sits the less of the original colour is left underneath to recover. Surface treatment does not touch this, because the contamination is at the base of the pile and in the foundation. It has to be flushed out of the whole rug, then the discolouration assessed on what the dye underneath actually survived.
