What English Village is built from
The smallest and closest-in of Mountain Brook's three villages, sitting just over the crest of Red Mountain: 1920s and 1930s brick and stucco shopfronts with flats above them, and compact period houses on the streets running back off the village.
A walkable pocket — downsizing owners, professionals a few minutes from the office, and households in smaller, more formal rooms than the acreage further out. Rugs here tend to be good, room-sized and chosen for a specific floor.
The English Village problem
Small rooms with solid masonry outside walls behave differently from big open ones. Brick and stucco hold cold long after the air in the room has warmed up, so through winter and the shoulder seasons the coldest surface in the house is the floor along an exterior wall — and moisture in the air goes to the coldest surface it can find. A rug running up to that wall picks it up first, and picks it up in the foundation rather than the pile, where nobody is looking. Add a Birmingham summer that runs humid for months and the same rug never gets a properly dry spell to recover in. The other thing worth saying plainly is access: a lot of these rugs live at the top of an interior stair with no lift, and a wet rug weighs several times what a dry one does, which is a good reason not to try washing it where it lies.
